Cape York

Plans and discussions have begun for a trek to Cape York, a destination everyone must tick off their ‘Bucket List’.

You will, of course, require a bike capable of making this type of sojourn (KLR650, DR650, GS650, GS800 etc) and probably at least a month of your holidays or long service leave.

Departure will be in May/June to avoid the wet season (dates will be worked out specifically to best suit participants) and will, by necessity, involve a mixture of Pub/Motels and camping.

Could not get Google to map to Cape York as it will only go where there are designated roads but be assured that the final point will be the very tip of Australia.

The Great South Land [Mexico]

: Ready to leave from Hungry Jacks, our new preferred departure lounge.

: Rode through a lot of rain and water across the road to end up at Temora.

: Having a coffee after finding somewhere to stay the night and putting all our gear in the drier.

: Temora is the home of Paleface Adios.

: He is always in the gutter somewhere 🙂

: Main drag of Temora, a place neither of us had visited before.

: Held up for roadworks again.

: Mohawk’s muffler modifications had an undesired side effect.

: The most expensive place we have stayed.

: Outside our motel room in Yea.

: Kamikaze bugs.

: We rode through quite a lot of locusts, most hit Mohawk in the head.

: Just prior to the computer winning him $61.20 with no human skill at all.

: Standard fare, beer and a feed at the pub in Tumut after setting all our gear out to dry.

: The owner here wanted to know if I thought he was lying to me about raisin toast. WTF

: I zigged when I shoulda zagged and we ended up here.

: Slapping on the back all ’round.

: Slipway has not seen action for a long time.

: A hole in the wall for petrol after an awesome ride to Marysville.

: Actually turned around and went back to this signposted ‘lookout’.

: The best thing to look at was the mighty KLunkeRs that had not missed a beat.

: Decisions, decisions.

: Myrtleford was not looking its best on this morning.

: Quite a good room off the top verandah at the Myrtleford Hotel.

: My bike stayed on the street with saddlebags on all night. Too wet and so route was changed.

: Saturated at Walwa, still the best name for a town ever 🙂

: Nice warming coffee and burglar at the general store after battling for fuel.

: Shot down the main street with the sun shining (somewhere 😀 ).

: Waiting for a break in the dry so that we could ride off in the rain.

: What’s this, another pub and another inappropriate feed?

: Return to the Royal Hotel at Tumut where we were drying out our gear yet again.

: Climbing out of Tumut on our way to 65ks of dirt to Wee Jasper.

: The famous (Cycle Torque Feb 2011) bridge crossing to Wee Jasper.

: Stopped near Abercrombie Caves for some personal relief.

: Came around the corner to find this had just happened on our final leg from Wisemans Ferry.

The Return to Grey Gum

A brave group of Niges met at Hungry Jacks and, despite an ordinary looking sky, headed off in search of the elusive Grey Gum Cafe.

Grey Gum Cafe

The call to arms saw Lucky, Briz, CC and Nige turn up at Maccas.

Briz and CC were not too keen on a run down the Putty again and opted for a ride up to the brewery at Newcastle and home via Catho Bay Pub.

Lucky and Nige headed off for the new cafe we had heard about the previous week. Instructions were that it was ‘a couple of k’s past the old halfway roadhouse’ on the Windsor side. Just when we were about to give up and turn around, we came across a sign indicating the cafe was only one more kilometre away (it was more like 17k’s from the old halfway house).

It is located exactly halfway along Putty Road, 86kms from Windsor and 86kms to Singleton.

They are open 7 days, with a full menu including pizza, pasta, cakes, sandwiches, coffee, soft drinks and even a souvenir shelf. They are also fully licensed but do not sell fuel.

It has modern decor including air-conditioning, a disabled access ramp, verandah dining, covered lawn dining, male/female toilets and showers, and most importantly, a purpose built concrete parking strip for motorcycles.

The staff and owners are very friendly and introduced themselves. Plenty of other riders came and went while were there.

This particular return run through Broke and the Putty has become my favourite ride, just the right mix of bendy bits and places where you can go ballistic.

PITS

Lucky and Nige decided for a quicky run up the old road to Pie in the Sky.

Nige clobbered a wallaby on the way, just before Warriors, minor damage to the super powerful Ninja but scared the sphincter muscle a bit tighter.

Later that day, took the KLunkeR up to see Mohawk and had a bad experience with a corner on the dirt road, locking up the back and ending up in a watery ditch on the side of the road. Took some massaging to get it out even after a lovely lady stopped and asked if I was okay, not sure what she was gunna do to help but …..

Putty Again

Brizzer, Cookie, Lucky and Nige did the usual run up to Broke and then the Putty Road to the Halfway House.

It was a good ride with millions of other bikes out on a beautiful day.

An ambulance was visiting a rider against the fence on our way south and another ambulance/chopper combo was visiting another rider (who appeared to be quite seriously hurt) on our return journey north. We think it was the same guy who just dropped his Fireblade in the driveway at Broke Servo earlier in the day. Poor bugger.

The toilets at the Halfway Roadhouse now work BUT cost a dollar to use.

The dude was selling sausage sandwiches and cold drinks on the grassed area.

We later heard that if you continue a few more k’s south that someone has started up a cafe in some portable buildings. Next time …

DD, where are you?

The power of your faith fixed my shoulder, not a hint of pain since, I need to make another apointment, re, other issues, also is it to much to ask, for you to bless my bike next time, so it will stay on two wheels. thanks Sideways

PS my insurance co is still crying for having reinsured me, but I’m gunna get a $2000 set of acropovic pipes for my trouble, one standard pipe costs $1500+

The Ride that was then wasn’t for some but is again…for sure.

A last minute thing but Lucky and Ant are riding back out to Orange on Monday 17th and returning Tuesday. Weather forecast looks good. Leave Maccas at Tuggerah at 9. Not sure about accommodation but be there if you can.

The ride that almost was…and then was!

Just when we all decided it was too wet & to go home - four intrepid Nige's decided to go anyway & last I heard arrived in Orange Monday night via Denman dry & happy. More stories to follow!
