Sundae Ride Report

Beautiful day. SMS tells me that Killswitch in out with ‘a sore ankle’. So much for ‘rain, hail or shine’. In the words of the immortal…. “MAN UP!” You only need one leg to ride a bike.
Brizzer and Sideways were up to the task, so we headed off through ‘the Bong”, to Freemans then on to Cessnock Airport Cafe for morning tea. Off through the wineries to Broke, and on to Wollembi for a cold drink. Along the twisties to Kulnura where Brizzer left to see a mate. Sideways and I went home via Yarramalong. A great ride with some great fellows. Let’s do it all again soon.

Day 103 Bright to Cowra

Not a great start, hardly any sleep. Smoke alarm in room has flat battery so it cheeped every hour, toilet ran constantly, fridge whired and clunked, compressors for pub just outside door and ran ALL night BUT it is a beautiful day for a ride through some of the best country around.

Day 102 Queenscliff to Bright

Left my luxurious cabin at Queenscliff and headed to the Sorrento Ferry.
Cabin

Much flasher that the Kangaroo Island Ferry, both ends open so it is a drive on – drive off affair. Also much cheaper with a proper motorcycle price.

Sorrento-Ferry

Was trying to decide which way to head home but after spending tooooo much time already on the Princes Hwy with tooooo many competitors, decided to head through the mountains to Bright.

I think I will continue my country odyssey tomorrow.

Day 100 Mount Gambier

Well, even though I turned 100 today, not one rider turned up for my ride, they must have been off on the splitter ride 🙁

Robe to Mount Gambier, still in SA but not for much longer. No beer tonight, dined in luxury at Maccas and now trying to plan the remaining route home while still hitting some highlights.

There are some really great bike roads with very little traffic around this area of South Australia, has reminded me that I am a bike rider and not a tourist.

Looking forward to the GOR.

Day 99 Robe

Left KI through Penneshaw Pub to the ferry

Pub

although it appeared as if everyone else was doing the same thing! There were some really good roads today along the Fleurieu Peninsula. I’m sure they would be in the bible but can’t be bothered looking. Reminds me of when I couldn’t be bothered taking photos of the blackboys in WA 🙂

Ferry
Caught another ferry across the mighty Murray River at Wellington. Just like being at home.

Wellington

Ferry1

Rode a road around the Coorong and Lake Alexandrina and Lake Albert at Meningie.

Albert1

Took the advice of a young fella I met on the ferry and headed to Robe for my layover. Interesting place, an obelisk, cray boats and a bit of history.

Obelisk1

Gaol1

Cray1

Rode up to the top of this silly lookout to see what I could see and I could see nothing so what do you call a lookout that doesn’t look out at anything??
Lookout1

Went back to Robe, found the shop and bought some bread/cheese for a meal and some longnecks to wash it all down. You wouldn’t be dead for quids.

TEDS3

I love beer and Chicken Twisties at the moment and as you can probably tell from the quality writing, these three are now empty!

Off to the Blue Lake at Mount Gambier tomorrow BUT lookout……………

Day 98 KI Second Day

Well, what can I say?

Spent the day being driven around the island without really seeing much of anything.

Coach

For a place that is promoted as nature’s wonderland, it was almost impossible to spot anything that was alive. The enormous koala population was decimated during the 2007 bushfires and I think the other purported critters are imaginary.

Sign1

This was, seriously, as close as you were allowed to get to the seals at Seal Bay, it was $27.50 for the privilege of being this ‘close’.

Seals

Next was the ‘Birds of Prey’ presentation, at least they were alive if not free. I did see a kookaburra do an amazing thing with its head, basically the body can be going in many directions but the head will stay perfectly still, quite bizzare to watch.

Eagle

Moving right along to ‘Remarkable Rocks’ that weren’t really.

Remarkable

Remarkable1

Final destination was ‘Admiral’s Arch’ that was exactly like it looked in photos.

Arch1

Arch2

Have booked on the 10:30am ferry to leave the island, not sure where I will get to tomorrow.

Scrounger’s Movember

When you get a chance, check out Scrounger’s Movember page (this is the full link to the page but it appears that the Movember site does not like a direct link, if this happens then you may need to search for Brad Lewis) and if you can manage to throw a few dollars at it even better. It is for excellent causes that are close to us males.

Poor bloke looks like he needs a bit of help to grow some hair as well 🙂

Day 97 Kangaroo Island

Beautiful day, cooler down south. Earliest ferry today was 12 noon and so decided to grab a quick haircut before leaving Victor Harbour. That head is just getting worserer and more worserer.

Haircut

Did I mention that it was short 🙂

Found an area in South Australia where they grow something besides wheat and had to stop and take a photo. Unfortunately, this was on a corner and just as I pulled back on to the road a car came screaming around the corner and nearly collected me, it was VERY close.

Corner

Deep breath, checked my undies and headed back down to the ferry terminal at Cape Jervis.

Ferry docking

Quite an expensive trip, $127 each way for me and the ‘Bird and after talking to some locals here on the island, they pay the same rates as everyone else every time they want to come or go. Semi trailers carrying freight, fuel etc; are charged thousands of dollars to cross but EVERYTHING comes to the island via ferry.

Ferry2

The ‘Bird did get special treatment though and they tied it down just in case.

Tied1

The water was a beautiful colour and glass smooth (my phone camera could not nearly do it justice) and there were even a few critters along the way.

Porphin

Kangaroo Island is a VERY big island (150km long and between 900m and 57km wide) and I travelled 60kms to Kingscote and my digs at the Seaview Guesthouse.

Seaview

Seaview1

Got organised and went for a ride to Emu Bay where you can get down onto the beach and fang along for a hairy ride. Very similar to Cable Beach in Broome and people do come down to swim and have a sunset meal (minus the camels :-] ).

EmuBay

There is a free tidal pool across the road from the guesthouse.

Tidal-Pool

Doing a tour of the southern section of the island tomorrow so will really have my tourist hat on ……. stop it …… I’m getting excited!

Day 96 Victor Harbour

Eventually left Fisherman’s Bay after almost being driven out by the heat, did I mention it was hot 🙂

Packed up ready to roll

Headed south, just glancing Adelaide and rode down South Road all the way to Cape Jervis where there really isn’t much.

A section of the road was particularly pleasant to ride at my usual law sensitive speed.

Nice section of road

Was too early or late to catch a ferry and so decided that I would travel to and spend the night in Victor Harbour. This is a very nice place with a relaxed feel about it, good pubs and food.

Horse drawn tram

Rang Briz and asked about the best place to view the mouth on the mighty Murray River and ended up here! I guess there is a mouth in there somewhere.

Murray Mouth?

After a few beers and some food, I wandered along the jetty to Granite Island and by chance ended up part of a guided group looking for penguins and seals, saw a few, got bored with nature and left.
